UK gilts rally as traders brace for Bank of England rate call
Gilt yields slid Monday as investors positioned themselves ahead of Thursday's Bank of England decision, with markets widely expecting a hike to 4%. Safe-haven buying tied to worries over AI spending and corporate profitability added fuel to the bond rally.
UK government bonds caught a bid Monday, pushing yields lower across the curve as traders squared up before the Bank of England's policy meeting later this week. The ten-year gilt yield dropped 6.8 basis points to 5.235% by 10:16 am CET, while the 30-year fell 6.6 basis points to 5.657%. The two-year slipped 6.2 basis points to 4.825%.
The driver: a widespread bet that the BoE will lift interest rates to 4% on Thursday, resuming a tightening cycle that had stalled through several recent pauses. Bond markets move on expectations before decisions land, and this week's positioning is no exception.
A flight to safety gave the move extra legs. Investors have been fretting over artificial intelligence spending and whether businesses can actually turn those outlays into profit, nudging money toward government debt.
The wider backdrop is a global climb in long-end borrowing costs. European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said Thursday that long-term bond yields have risen sharply across markets, pointing to inflation and rate expectations plus heavy debt issuance from some of the world's biggest tech companies. She added that high-debt countries should know rates will be higher.
Recent auctions show the appetite is there. Germany's Finanzagentur sold €5 billion of two-year notes at an average yield of 3.08% with a bid-to-cover of 1.3, and the US Treasury's $69 billion two-year sale drew a 2.59 cover ratio. All eyes now sit on Thursday, when the BoE reveals whether the 4% bet pays off.
