Tether posts $1.5B Q3 profit and doubles its cushion, now at $7.95B
Tether banked $1.5 billion in Q3 and pumped its excess reserve buffer to $7.95 billion, nearly double the $4.1 billion it held in Q2. Most of that extra cushion is paper profit from Bitcoin and gold, which could evaporate fast. USDT is still the biggest stablecoin, with a record 727 million users.
Tether is sitting on a much fatter safety net. The stablecoin giant closed the third quarter with $7.95 billion in excess reserves, up from $4.1 billion three months earlier — a $3.85 billion jump, according to AMBCrypto. Net profit for the quarter landed at $1.5 billion, matching what it pulled in during Q2.
Here's the catch: most of that new cushion isn't cash in hand. It's unrealized paper gains from Tether's Bitcoin stash of 100,000 BTC and its gold holdings. Bitcoin's climb from $58K to more than $83K during the quarter added $2.47 billion to the value of that BTC alone. Gold's roughly 4% rally chipped in another $700 million — even after Tether trimmed its physical gold by 3.4 metric tonnes. If markets roll over, those gains roll back.
The real earnings engine sits elsewhere: interest on the roughly $135 billion in U.S. Treasury bonds backing USDT. That steady income has pushed Tether's haul to $4.5 billion so far this year, and the report projects it could hit $6 billion by year-end if the pace holds.
USDT wrapped up Q3 with about $183 billion in market cap, still the largest stablecoin on the board, though it recorded a modest decline over the quarter. On the brighter side, its user base grew 6%, hitting a record 727 million. CEO Paolo Ardoino framed the beefed-up reserves as a response to a messy world, saying the liquidity is there to handle redemptions and back infrastructure "amidst the chaotic geopolitical environment we live in."
Washington isn't letting up. Congress pressed Tether during the quarter over illicit Iranian capital flows and for transparency on its ties to certain figures in the Trump administration, per the report. Tether's counterpunch: more aggressive freezing of USDT linked to sanctioned entities, plus a founding-partner role in the FASE Foundation, a new outfit aimed at fighting scams and backing trafficking survivors.
Whether that's enough to cool the heat is an open question heading into Q4 — especially with a Democrat-controlled Congress holding the gavels.
