Standard Chartered Debuts Tokenized Deposits in Hong Kong With 24/7 Settlement
Standard Chartered is launching tokenized deposits in Hong Kong, the first market in its global network to offer real-time, 24/7 inter-bank settlement in central bank money for corporate clients, per CoinDesk. China AMC, Fireblocks and HashKey are among the early partners.
Standard Chartered is rolling out tokenized deposits in Hong Kong, according to CoinDesk, making the city the first stop in the bank's global network to get the technology. The setup lets corporate clients settle between banks in real time, around the clock, using central bank money.
That last part is the headline feature. Inter-bank settlement usually keeps banker's hours, which means money parked overnight and over weekends. Standard Chartered's tokenized deposits are built to run 24/7, so corporate treasuries aren't waiting for a market to open before funds move.
The bank isn't going it alone. China AMC, Fireblocks and HashKey are among the early partners on the launch, bringing asset management, digital asset infrastructure and Hong Kong crypto licensing experience into the same room.
Hong Kong gets first-mover status here, but the wording from CoinDesk points to something bigger: this is the first market in Standard Chartered's network, not the only one. The playbook, if it holds up in the city, has a blueprint to travel.
Tokenized deposits sit in the crowded middle ground between stablecoins and old-school bank money. The pitch is blockchain rails with the safety of a central bank behind them, and Standard Chartered is now testing whether corporates buy it.
Next up is watching who else signs on and how fast the bank pushes the model into other markets. For Hong Kong, it's another marker in its bid to stay the region's regulated digital asset hub.
