South Africa deputy police chief Shadrack Sibiya resigns after sexual offence charges
South Africa's deputy police chief, Lt Gen Shadrack Sibiya, has resigned three weeks after being charged with sexual offences. He denies all charges, including grooming a 16-year-old girl and raping an 18-year-old woman. His resignation was recorded as a dishonourable discharge, police said.
Lt Gen Shadrack Sibiya, South Africa's deputy police chief, submitted his resignation on Monday during a disciplinary hearing, according to a police spokesperson. His lawyer handed in the letter, ending his tenure three weeks after he was charged with sexual offences. Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said on X that his departure was regarded as a dishonourable discharge.
The charges against Sibiya include sexually grooming a 16-year-old girl, raping an 18-year-old woman, and trafficking. He has denied all the allegations. He has admitted to having sex with the 18-year-old but insists it was consensual.
Sibiya has been in custody since his arrest three weeks ago, after a court denied his bail application. He remains in detention as the case proceeds.
The resignation comes as the South African Police Service faces intense scrutiny at a major public inquiry into corruption and collusion with criminals. The inquiry, known as the Madlanga Commission, began in September 2025.
According to BBC News, the Madlanga Commission has heard accusations that Sibiya received a gift of 20 impalas from an alleged criminal kingpin in exchange for a police contract. He denied that allegation.
