Shipper Alliance Taps Tesla for 2,500 Semis in Record Electric Truck Order
Z-Scale just ordered 2,500 Tesla Class 8 electric trucks — what the shipper alliance calls the biggest electric truck order ever placed in the US. The buy pools demand from PepsiCo, Microsoft, IKEA and Red Bull, and could nearly double the battery-electric Class 8 fleet on American roads.
Z-Scale has locked in 2,500 electric Class 8 trucks, naming Tesla its primary supplier in what the program bills as the largest electric truck order in U.S. history. The haul is almost enough to double the entire fleet of battery-electric Class 8 trucks running on American roads today, according to Cristiano Façanha, who leads Road Freight Electrification North America at Smart Freight Centre.
The buyer is a shipper alliance whose full name is Zero Emission Truck Shipper Carrier Alliance Leading Electrification. Smart Freight Centre and Catalyst Mobility run it together, pooling demand from PepsiCo, Microsoft, IKEA and Red Bull to hand truck makers a purchasing signal too big to ignore. Round one is 2,500 trucks; the endgame is 10,000.
That volume is the whole point. Battery-electric Class 8 trucks have long run about three times the price of a comparable diesel rig, leaving carriers, manufacturers and shippers stuck in a chicken-and-egg deadlock. Façanha said aligning the entire ecosystem and guaranteeing large-scale demand is what finally let truck makers price at scale.
Tesla won a competitive RFP open to every Class 8 battery-electric truck maker selling in the U.S. The evaluation weighed price, performance, production capability and maintenance support. Façanha pointed to Tesla's Standard Range and Long Range Semi — the Long Range version goes 400 to 500 miles on a charge — plus a competitive price and verified production capacity.
Carriers who want something other than a Tesla aren't stuck. Kenworth, Bright/BYD and Volvo were prequalified as alternatives for those who prefer a different badge.
Z-Scale figures 10,000 trucks is the magic number — the threshold where the electric truck market stands on its own. With 2,500 in the bag, the alliance is a quarter of the way there.
