Russian bombs kill 18 in Zaporizhzhia village, Zelensky says
Zelensky says Russian strikes on southeastern Zaporizhzhia killed 18 people and injured five, hitting a school used for humanitarian aid and a shelter in Komyshuvakha. He says the attack shows Moscow has no plans to de-escalate, as a US-brokered ceasefire in Oleshky wraps up.
Volodymyr Zelensky says Russian strikes tore through southeastern Zaporizhzhia on Monday, killing 18 people and wounding five more. The Ukrainian president broke the toll in a Telegram post, calling the attacks — and the casualties they left behind — extremely terrible.
The bombs fell on Komyshuvakha, a village in the region's southeast. According to Zelensky, they hit a school that had been repurposed for humanitarian needs, plus a shelter where people had taken cover. That a school and a shelter became targets is the detail he returned to.
For Zelensky, the strikes answer a question nobody had to ask. He said they prove Moscow has no interest in de-escalating and intends to keep up what he described as further killings.
The bloodshed lands the same day the Kremlin's Dmitry Peskov suggested Ukraine may have used a ceasefire in Oleshky to regroup. Asked at a press conference whether Russia had exploited the truce the same way, Peskov said Ukraine could have done so too, calling it normal practice. He added that no similar ceasefire is in the works right now. Russia had previously said the Oleshky truce ended without incidents.
Other fronts stayed hot: an overnight Russian attack in Odessa injured four people, per Serhiy Lysak, head of the city's military administration, who reported damage to infrastructure, two residential buildings and a garage. Russia's Defense Ministry, meanwhile, said its drones hit Ukrainian port facilities and military sea vessels, including a Neptune anti-ship missile launcher site near Tuzly and a dry cargo vessel south of Odessa.
The Oleshky ceasefire was brokered by U.S. First Lady Melania Trump, who called it a success on X. She said it wrapped on November 1 as planned, delivered critical aid and enabled the evacuation of nearly 800 people, and she thanked Russia and Ukraine for their cooperation while hoping it becomes a foundation for lasting peace.
