Powderfinger announce first Australian tour in 17 years
Powderfinger, one of Australia's best-loved rock bands, have announced a comeback tour taking place 17 years after they broke up. The Brisbane group will play 18 shows across six Australian cities next September, all staged in a stadium-sized big-top tent, with performances on Friday and Saturday nights only. No dates outside Australia have been announced.
Powderfinger will return to the road next September, opening with four nights in their hometown of Brisbane before playing another 14 shows in Cairns, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne. Every date on the run will be held inside what the band described as a stadium-sized big-top tent. The schedule sticks to Friday and Saturday nights only, a format similar to the one Oasis used on their recent world tour. No concerts outside Australia have been confirmed so far.
The Brisbane-formed group said in a statement on Monday that they were 'absolutely ecstatic' to be playing together again. They explained that fans had repeatedly urged them to tour over the years, but that the timing had never worked for all members until now. The band also thanked their long-standing supporters and noted that many newer listeners have never had the chance to see them live.
Powderfinger confirmed their reunion last week, 17 years after they split. During their career they released seven studio albums, among them 2000's Odyssey Number Five, which listeners of the ABC's Triple J voted the greatest Australian album of all time in 2011. Their catalogue of hits also includes On My Mind, These Days and Sunsets.
The band's profile with Australian audiences has endured: the Odyssey Number Five single My Happiness was ranked the sixth-best Australian song of all time by Triple J listeners in 2025. In their statement, the members said people often tell them their music is tied to treasured and joyful memories, and that they hope to create more of those moments on the upcoming dates. They added that the tour will feature a mix of established and emerging Australian acts.
Since the split, frontman Bernard Fanning has continued a solo career, while bassist John Collins has opened two of Brisbane's largest live music venues. Further announcements about support acts and any additional shows have yet to be made.
