One in Five ChatGPT Users Now Just Talk to It, OpenAI Says
OpenAI says 250 million people lean on ChatGPT's voice and dictation features every week, up from 150 million in July. Against a 1.2 billion weekly base, that's roughly one in five users skipping the keyboard. The catch: the number is OpenAI's own, and nobody outside has checked it.
Talking to your phone on the train has officially gone mainstream. OpenAI says 250 million people now use ChatGPT's voice or dictation features each week, according to Crypto Briefing. That's a big jump from the 150 million weekly voice users the company reported back on July 8, 2026.
Put it in context and the scale lands. ChatGPT counted 1.2 billion weekly users as of September 29, 2026, so the voice crowd is roughly one in five. The base itself has been climbing fast — 900 million weekly actives in February 2026, past 1 billion in August, then 1.2 billion by late September.
The July milestone arrived alongside GPT-Live, OpenAI's newer voice models, which made full-duplex voice the default for ChatGPT Voice. Full-duplex means both sides talk and listen at once, like a phone call, instead of the walkie-talkie rhythm of taking turns. Flipping that on by default appears to have done a lot of the heavy lifting — less friction, more people trying it.
Where's everyone using it? The hands-free stuff. Commuting, where typing is impractical or straight-up illegal, and language practice, where speaking out loud is the whole point. Dictation is the quieter half of the figure: people who still want text on screen but would rather say it than thumb it out.
One asterisk worth sticking on all of this. The 250 million number comes straight from OpenAI and hasn't been independently verified, per Crypto Briefing — normal for a private company reporting its own engagement stats, but still its own account rather than an audited count. And voice raises the bar on reliability, since a laggy reply while someone's driving or drilling a new language is far harder to shrug off than a typo.
Next checkpoints are clear enough. Watch whether the projected 1.3 billion monthly actives for October actually show up, whether voice keeps eating past that one-in-five share, and whether OpenAI starts splitting voice and dictation into separate numbers. Paying customers, by the way, numbered more than 50 million consumer subscribers as of February 2026.
