Manipur death toll rises to nine after Kuki-Naga clashes, CM appeals for peace
Two days of armed clashes between Kuki and Naga communities in Manipur have killed nine people across three districts, with an unofficial toll of 11. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh condemned the violence and said extra security forces were sent to Kamjong and Kangpokpi. Prohibitory orders were imposed in the worst-hit village.
Tension remained high across Manipur on Sunday after two days of armed conflict between Kuki and Naga communities left nine people dead in three districts. The unofficial toll stood at 11, according to The Hindu, which reported that two members of the Myanmar-based Kuki National Army-Burma were killed in a gunfight near the India-Myanmar border in the Naga-dominated Kamjong district. Prohibitory orders under Section 162 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita were imposed in the affected village to prevent further violence.
The clashes began in Kamjong on Friday night and spread to interior areas of the Kuki-majority Kangpokpi district by Saturday afternoon. The first victim was a 42-year-old Kuki woman shot by unidentified gunmen in Chassad Kuki village, an attack that triggered a gunfight between armed groups lasting into Saturday morning, in which a 22-year-old Kuki man was killed. Two Naga men were later killed elsewhere in the district, and a Gurkha farmer travelling to his leased farm was killed in the Naga-dominated Ukhrul district.
Hours after those deaths, four Nagas were killed in two separate attacks in Kangpokpi district, one of them beheaded, according to local residents cited by The Hindu.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh condemned the killing of civilians and said he had directed authorities to take immediate steps to control the situation, restore order and ensure the safety of all citizens. He appealed to public leaders and community organisations to exercise restraint and cooperate in defusing tensions, urging a focus on peace, dialogue and harmony, and said additional security forces had been dispatched to Kamjong and Kangpokpi.
Naga MLA Leishiyo Keishing, who represents the Phungyar constituency in Kamjong, wrote to State Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas on Saturday asking for adequate security personnel to be deployed to protect lives and public property. On Sunday, the All Naga Students' Association condemned what it called
