Houthis claim they hit a military aircraft at Saudi Arabia's Jizan airport
Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree says the group struck a military transport aircraft and an early warning radar at Saudi Arabia's Jizan airport. The Saudi-led coalition says it downed drones over Riyadh and intercepted a ballistic missile, while the EU demands the attacks stop.
Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree said Monday that the group hit a military transport aircraft at Jizan airport in southwestern Saudi Arabia. In a post on Telegram, he also claimed an early warning radar at the same site was struck by a drone. There has been no independent confirmation of damage at the airport.
Saree went further, saying the Houthis targeted Dammam Airport twice with drones over the past 48 hours and that the strikes disrupted air traffic there. He framed both operations as successes. No outside verification of the Dammam claims was immediately available.
The Saudi-led coalition backing Yemen's government gave a different account of the day. Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Maliki said its forces shot down two drones over the Riyadh area on Monday, and earlier announced it had intercepted a Houthi ballistic missile. He offered no details on damage or casualties.
Saudi civil defense officials briefly warned residents about possible Houthi strikes in Khamis Mushait, Najran and Taif provinces, plus Abha City in the southwest. They soon said the danger had passed in all affected areas and urged people to follow official guidance. The alert came after the coalition hit energy infrastructure in the Houthi-controlled Hodeidah governorate.
The European Union condemned the escalation, with High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas insisting all Houthi military action "must end immediately" and calling on the group's backers, Iran among them, to withdraw their support. Brussels said it will increase backing for Yemen's government and humanitarian aid, noting that more than 22 million people need assistance. It also stressed the importance of protecting maritime security.
