Houthis claim drone strike on Saudi Arabia's Abha airport
Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree says his movement hit Abha International Airport in southwestern Saudi Arabia with a drone on Tuesday, claiming the strike was precise and disrupted air traffic. Earlier the same day, the Saudi-led coalition said it downed three Houthi missiles aimed at the kingdom's east. Saudi Civil Defense also warned of danger in Najran City.
The Houthis say they sent a drone into Saudi Arabia's southwest on Tuesday, targeting Abha International Airport in Asir province. Spokesperson Yahya Saree made the claim in a post on X, saying the strike was precise and that it disrupted air traffic at the site. The claim comes from the movement itself, with Saree as its public voice on the operation.
The airport strike wasn't the only flare-up of the day. Earlier Tuesday, the Saudi-led coalition backing Yemen's internationally recognized government said it intercepted three Houthi missiles launched toward Saudi Arabia's east. The coalition has been the kingdom's military shield in the Yemen war, and intercept announcements have become a near-daily rhythm.
Inside Saudi Arabia, authorities moved to protect civilians. The Saudi Civil Defense issued a danger warning for Najran City on Tuesday, urging residents to follow security guidelines, stay indoors and avoid open spaces, bridges and high-rise buildings. Najran has been targeted by the Houthi militia multiple times since the war started, and the agency said it will announce through official channels once the danger passes.
Elsewhere in the region, an oil tanker caught fire after striking naval mines east of the Strait of Hormuz, according to Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, which cited a statement from the Iranian Army. The army said the vessel had switched off its tracking systems while trying to cross a prohibited and unsafe area without authorization. It repeated its warning that the strait remains unsafe and closed for ships passing without coordination.
Also on Tuesday, Yemeni forces carried out air strikes on areas of Mocha city and its port, west of Taiz, according to Al Jazeera, which cited Houthi-affiliated media. No further details were immediately available.
