GTA VI Poised for Record-Breaking Launch as 11,000 Game Jobs Vanish
Grand Theft Auto VI is forecast to pull in up to €4.6 billion in its first week, with a development budget past €1 billion, while the wider industry sheds more than 11,000 jobs. Rockstar's own staff vote on union recognition inside the launch window.
Grand Theft Auto VI is shaping up to be the biggest payday the video game business has ever seen. Analysts cited by NOS project the Rockstar Games title will haul in between €2.9 billion and €4.6 billion in its first week alone, against a development budget that reportedly tops €1 billion. The game lands Nov. 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The hype is already bending the wider market. Research firm Newzoo expects global gaming turnover to hit roughly €192 billion, a 6% bump on 2023, with console software revenue jumping more than 17%. Players are even buying consoles specifically to be ready for launch day, according to Gameliner. The holiday calendar gets a second heavyweight too: a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time arrives Nov. 5, 2026, revisiting the 1998 Nintendo 64 classic still ranked among the best games ever made.
That gold rush sits next to a brutal reality. More than 11,000 game developers have lost their jobs this year, mostly in North America and Europe, per NOS, as publishers trim spending after the post-pandemic correction. Ubisoft cut hundreds of roles and shuttered offices in Sweden, Canada and Serbia, chasing some €200 million in annual savings. Microsoft ran the largest reorganization in Xbox history in July, axing 3,200 positions, half of them on the spot.
Electronic Arts shut down BioWare after 31 years, costing 400 jobs and killing the next Mass Effect. In the Netherlands, Utrecht's Ronimo Games folded in 2023, The Hague's Paladin Studios followed in 2024, and PlayerUnknown Productions held a bankruptcy auction for its specialized hardware last summer.
The flood of displaced talent is overwhelming the studios still hiring. Keano Raubun, founder of Utrecht-based Veelpoot, said a single job posting pulled in 1,200 applications from experienced international developers within one day.
Rockstar is facing its own internal fight. Employees will vote on recognizing the Rockstar Game Workers Union from Nov. 12 to Nov. 26, overlapping the launch window, according to Gameliner, which cited Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier. The Independent Workers Union of Great Britain is coordinating the drive, which follows the dismissal of 31 union members on Oct. 30, 2025. Labor court hearings are set for Nov. 17 and 18.
