EU Name Checks Now Snag Euro Transfers Bound for Crypto Platforms
Since Oct. 9, 2025, euro-area payment providers must offer free payee name verification on standard and instant euro transfers, including eligible SEPA payments to crypto platforms. A warning isn't a block, and it checks the IBAN's account name — not a platform's brand. German users back the idea but pan the execution.
Euro-area payment providers have been required to offer free name verification on standard and instant euro transfers since Oct. 9, 2025 — and that includes eligible SEPA payments made by crypto customers. The rule, reported by tokenpost.com, means a payer's bank now checks whether the name they typed matches the name attached to the recipient's IBAN before the money moves.
The check returns one of four results: a match, a close match, no match, or a signal that verification simply wasn't possible. Crucially, a warning is not a block. The payer can look over the details and push the payment through anyway. It also doesn't care whether the account name looks like a crypto brand — only whether it matches the name on the IBAN.
That distinction matters because deposit setups vary wildly across platforms. Kraken's Banking Circle option, for example, hands each customer a dedicated bank account in their own name for euro transfers over SEPA or SEPA Instant. Where a platform pools funds under a corporate name instead, customers may see warnings even when nothing is wrong.
German consumers aren't thrilled with the rollout. A survey of 1,030 online-banking users conducted Aug. 3-9, 2026, found 91% backed the check in principle, but 27% rated its implementation poorly. Among those who'd seen a warning in the previous six months, 58% said it fired on roughly a quarter or more of their transfers. “Anyone who repeatedly receives false alarms will eventually click warnings away,” said Dorothea Mohn, head of the financial markets team at Verbraucherzentrale Bundesverband (vzbv).
Don't confuse this with the EU's instant-payment timing rule. Euro-area banks had to start receiving instant payments by Jan. 9, 2025, and sending them by Oct. 9, 2025, with funds generally landing in the recipient's payment account within 10 seconds. That clock says nothing about how fast a crypto platform credits the deposit to a customer's trading balance.
Payment providers in EU countries outside the euro area have more runway — they don't have to offer payee verification until July 9, 2027.
