Egypt pledges support to Saudi Arabia amid Houthi attacks
Egypt has pledged to provide Saudi Arabia with all necessary support to defend its security and stability, following recent Houthi attacks on the kingdom. The National Defence Council, chaired by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, said Egypt stands fully with Saudi Arabia and will intensify diplomatic efforts for de-escalation. The Houthis recently attacked Riyadh's airport and Saudi Aramco.
Egypt's National Defence Council, chaired by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, announced on Sunday that Cairo is prepared to offer Saudi Arabia 'all necessary and possible support' to defend its safety and stability. The council stated that Egypt 'stands fully with' the kingdom in protecting its resources, territorial integrity and Islamic holy sites. The presidency added that Cairo would also intensify diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation.
The pledge comes as Yemen's Houthi rebels, also known as Ansar Allah, have continued their attacks on Saudi Arabia in recent days. According to Al Jazeera, the Iran-aligned group struck Riyadh's international airport and the state oil company Saudi Aramco. The assaults have occurred amid renewed fighting in Yemen between the Houthis and Saudi-backed forces of the internationally recognised government, following the collapse of a truce.
In a speech on Saturday, Sisi said Egypt would act in accordance with guidance from Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The crown prince had visited Sisi last month, after fighting in Yemen reignited. The Egyptian leader's comments highlighted Cairo's support for Riyadh during the current escalation.
The National Defence Council did not specify what form Egypt's support would take. It also reaffirmed Cairo's commitment to diplomatic efforts for de-escalation. The situation remains fluid, and Al Jazeera noted that more information is to come.
