Coalition of the Willing books first drills in Poland, 2,800 troops set to test deployment

The Coalition of the Willing has locked in its first deployment. On November 9, troops from the 36-nation alliance will kick off military exercises in Nowa Dęba, Poland, with Ukraine also taking part, according to Le Monde. The drills — dubbed Koalicja, Polish for 'coalition' — run through November 22.

This isn't a parade of armor. Roughly 2,800 military personnel from ten countries will take the field, and the point is to stress-test the command system and the logistics of moving troops and equipment across Europe. That's a genuinely messy job, Le Monde notes, because it means crossing border after border. Counter-drone warfare is on the agenda too.

The endgame is bigger than Poland. France and Britain lead the coalition, and the exercise is designed to prove the group can actually deploy forces into Ukraine once the war ends. NATO has been briefed on the maneuvers but won't take part directly, and the alliance's role in future security guarantees for Ukraine remains murky.

Don't expect tanks and missiles in a show of force, per Le Monde. This one is about the unglamorous machinery: how orders travel, how gear moves, how ten militaries speak to each other under pressure.

Talk of boots on the ground after a ceasefire has been building, and recent reporting has floated the numbers of peacekeepers the West might send. November's drills in Poland look like the dry run — the first real rehearsal for a force that doesn't exist yet.
