Circle Opens CCTP to Third-Party Tokens on Arc, Skipping Bridges
Circle is expanding its Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol so third-party ERC-20 tokens can move cross-chain on Arc, its own blockchain. Issuers get burn-and-mint transfers instead of bolting on a separate bridge or issuing wrapped tokens, according to CoinDesk.
Circle just widened the on-ramp for token issuers. The company is expanding its Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol, CCTP, to support third-party ERC-20 tokens on Arc, its own blockchain, CoinDesk reported Thursday.
The pitch is simplicity: tokens move between chains through Circle's burn-and-mint setup. No separate bridge to bolt on, no wrapped-token stand-in shadowing the original asset. Issuers burn on one side, mint on the other, and Circle's rails do the rest.
That's a meaningful shift for a space where bridges have long been the soft spot — wrapped assets and external bridge contracts have been a frequent target for exploits. Fold cross-chain movement into the issuer's own infrastructure and you cut a layer out of the stack.
Details are still thin beyond the headline. CoinDesk's report didn't spell out which chains are supported, when the ERC-20 support goes live, or which issuers have signed on. Circle hasn't published a fuller breakdown yet, so the roadmap remains the open question.
For Circle, the move extends CCTP from a USDC-focused transfer tool into broader token plumbing on Arc. For issuers, it's a bet that fewer moving parts beats more flexibility — at least until the next integration lands.
