BYD clears 300,000 EVs in a month for the first time as hybrids slip
BYD sold 305,743 battery-electric cars in October 2026, topping 300,000 in a single month for the first time — up 37.4 per cent year on year. Total deliveries passed 490,000 with hybrids included. Plug-in sales slid 17.2 per cent as exports doubled and Chinese demand cooled.
BYD just did something it has never done before. The Chinese giant moved 305,743 battery-electric passenger cars in October 2026, clearing the 300,000 mark in a single month for the first time, according to Electrive. That's a 37.4 per cent jump over the same month last year, and it's the third straight month that BEVs have set a fresh record.
Add the plug-in hybrids and the group delivered more than 490,000 vehicles worldwide, roughly 11 per cent more than in October 2025. Sequentially, total sales climbed 5.74 per cent from September, while pure electric volume rose 11.9 per cent. The message is getting loud: the growth engine inside BYD is tipping toward batteries-only drivetrains.
The hybrids are the laggards. BYD sold 177,382 PHEVs in October, down 17.2 per cent year on year, after a slight dip in September too. For the year so far, plug-ins are off 11.02 per cent at 1,625,969 units, while battery-electric sales are up 5.86 per cent at 1,935,700.
Across the group's four brands, the core BYD marque carried the load with 423,843 units. The off-road-flavoured Fangchengbao moved 43,872 vehicles, premium brand Denza — now selling in Europe — added 15,152, and hypercar label Yangwang chipped in 258.
Exports remain the rocket. BYD shipped 170,194 vehicles abroad in October, more than double the year-earlier figure with a 102.8 per cent surge, though that was down 5.8 per cent from September. Exports accounted for about 35 per cent of the month's total, while domestic Chinese sales came in at 319,974 — down 10.6 per cent year on year, but up 13.1 per cent from September.
Zoom out and the picture is mixed. January through October brought 3,621,744 New Energy Vehicles, a 2.16 per cent decline from the same stretch in 2025, though that gap has narrowed from 3.9 per cent after nine months. Overseas volume for the period hit 1,513,154 units, up 93.75 per cent, as BYD leans harder on international markets to offset a brutal fight for buyers at home.
