Bitcoin Flees Exchanges: $1B and 12,570 BTC Walk Out in a Day
Roughly 12,570 BTC drained off trading platforms on a net basis on Oct. 27, a pull worth about $1.01 billion at current prices, according to CryptoQuant. It's one of the biggest daily outflows this month, and it flipped the script from a positive netflow a day earlier.
Bitcoin holders yanked the door shut on exchanges this week. On-chain data from CryptoQuant shows the Bitcoin exchange netflow tumbling to roughly -12,570 BTC as of Oct. 27 — a net exit worth about $1.01 billion with BTC trading near $80,487. That ranks among the heaviest daily outflows of the month.
The turnaround was abrupt. Just a day earlier, exchanges logged a positive netflow of more than 7,000 BTC before the metric plunged deep into negative territory. The last spike this sharp came on Oct. 6, when nearly 15,000 BTC left exchanges on a net basis.
CryptoQuant notes the Oct. 27 figure isn't final yet — the data is still filling in, so the daily number could shift. Even so, the direction is clear: coins are heading out, not in.
Why does it matter? Outflows are typically read as bullish. When BTC leaves an exchange it often lands in private wallets, institutional custody or long-term storage, which thins the supply sitting readily available for trading and eases potential selling pressure. Inflows do the opposite — coins arriving on platforms usually signal holders lining up to sell.
The timing is what makes it interesting. Bitcoin has been limping, hovering around $80,487 as of Oct. 27 after a slide to the psychological $80,000 mark. It's now hunting for momentum, and a billion-dollar exit from trading venues is one loud signal that some holders would rather sit tight than sell into the weakness.
