Big Tech AI Fears Spark Bloodbath: Intel Loses $150B, Alphabet Nearly $500B
A brutal 48-hour stretch hammered AI-linked tech stocks, with Intel, Alphabet, Amazon and SanDisk all taking heavy losses, according to @BullTheoryio. Disappointing earnings and ballooning AI infrastructure budgets have investors asking whether the spending can ever pay for itself. The pain is now bleeding into the chip sector.
Four of tech's biggest names got crushed in roughly 48 hours, according to a breakdown from @BullTheoryio. Intel led the damage with a 32.9% drop, Alphabet fell 14.5%, SanDisk slid 15.8% and Amazon shed 10%. The trigger: a run of earnings reports that spooked investors about how much Big Tech is pouring into AI and whether the payoff is anywhere close.
Intel took the hardest hit. Its Q4 revenue guidance landed about $1.1 billion below what investors were expecting, and the stock's collapse erased $150 billion in market value — the company's largest single-day decline in more than 40 years, per @BullTheoryio.
Alphabet didn't fare much better. The company posted 25% year-over-year revenue growth, but free cash flow flipped negative by $9.1 billion when investors had expected it to roughly break even. Nearly $500 billion in market value vanished in a single day, one of the deepest one-day drops in its history.
Amazon's story is a spending story. AWS revenue climbed 39%, its fastest growth in almost five years, yet the company plans $220 billion in capital expenditures this year — mostly for AI infrastructure — with even more expected in 2027. Meanwhile annual free cash flow swung from positive $14.8 billion to negative $42.4 billion in just 12 months.
SanDisk shows that even good numbers weren't enough. It beat earnings expectations with 378% yearly revenue growth, but quarterly growth cooled from 51% to 23%, and investors stayed on the sidelines.
The common thread is cash. Investors are increasingly worried that Big Tech is committing hundreds of billions to AI infrastructure without generating enough money to justify the bill, and those doubts are now rippling out across the semiconductor sector.
