Padang Flood: Brimob Deploys 300 Personnel, PRR Task Force Sends Team
Heavy rain in Padang since Oct. 10, 2026, caused rivers to overflow and prompted West Sumatra's mobile brigade police to deploy 300 personnel in three SAR teams. About 330 people were evacuated from Lumin Park and Guo Kuranji, and the PRR task force sent teams to affected areas in Sumatra, including Aceh.
The PRR task force has ordered teams to move to flood-affected areas in Sumatra, including Aceh, after fresh flooding reports, according to Tempo. Tito Karnavian, chief of the task force, told national command post chief Insp. Gen. Wahyu Bintono on Monday, Oct. 12, 2026, to send personnel to West Sumatra and Aceh. The directive came as 300 Satbrimob personnel from the West Sumatra Police were mobilized about two hours after the first flood report was received.
Satbrimob commander Kombes Pol Lukman Syafri Dandel Malik led the 300 personnel and divided them into three teams. Two hundred were assigned to the Lumin Park housing complex in Lubuk Minturun, Koto Tangah; 50 from Batalyon A Pelopor went to Dadok Tunggul Hitam; and 50 from Detasemen Gegana were sent to Guo Kuranji. The units brought rubber boats, outboard motors, life jackets, SAR helmets, rescue ropes and other equipment, with personnel carriers and special SAR vehicles on standby.
BPBD Kota Padang reported that the Lubuk Minturun River overflowed and submerged settlements in Koto Tangah. In Kuranji, a river embankment at Lapau Munggu broke, while flooding in Kampung Lapai, Nanggalo, was linked to the Batang Kuranji River. Brimob field reports said about 300 residents were evacuated from Lumin Park and 30 from Guo Kuranji, with about 100 houses affected in Lumin Park and five in Guo Kuranji; the agency noted that operational data may differ from overall disaster figures.
The Padang city government also sent joint teams to evacuate residents in Koto Tangah, Kuranji and Nanggalo. Police worked with BPBD, the Indonesian military and Basarnas, while local agencies including the fire department, Satpol PP, the health office and the transportation office supported relief efforts. Emergency needs identified in the Brimob report included flashlights, life jackets, raincoats, generators, power banks, ready-to-eat meals and bottled water. BPBD Padang urged people living along riverbanks and in flood-prone areas to stay alert as heavy rain could continue.
Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko said personnel on the ground were prioritizing public safety and would keep coordinating with relevant agencies. He also called on residents to remain cautious about possible subsequent floods, follow officers' instructions and move to safer ground if their surroundings became dangerous. Wakasatgas III Comr. Gen. Ramdani Hidayat reported the police's rapid response to Tito, who has previously asked ministry, military and police elements to oversee recovery in affected areas and has communicated with regional heads. Tito has said all units should go directly to the field.
