Mastercard launches Global Money Platform to bring stablecoins into banking
Mastercard introduced Global Money Platform, letting businesses hold and convert fiat and stablecoins, offer stablecoin-linked cards and pay out to local bank accounts. It marks the card network's first major integration with BVNK since acquiring the firm in August, and steps up competition with Visa's stablecoin infrastructure push.
Mastercard has unveiled a platform designed to let businesses fold stablecoins into conventional banking and card payments, its first significant product integration with BVNK since acquiring the stablecoin infrastructure firm in August. The service, called Global Money Platform, was announced Thursday and is aimed at companies that want to offer digital-currency payments without constructing their own back-end systems.
According to Mastercard, the platform allows businesses to hold and convert both fiat currencies and stablecoins, issue cards tied to stablecoin balances, and push payments directly from stablecoin holdings into recipients' local bank accounts. It links into Mastercard Move, the company's global money transfer network, which Mastercard says can route payments to more than 17 billion endpoints spanning bank accounts and cards.
The offering also ties stablecoin balances into Mastercard's merchant network, giving customers a way to spend those funds through payment cards. Nuvei, Marqeta and several other fintech firms are among the first companies integrating the platform, according to the announcement.
The move shifts Mastercard deeper into providing infrastructure that financial institutions can white-label to offer stablecoin services under their own branding, rather than solely processing transactions. It also places the payments giant in more direct competition with Visa, which rolled out a platform in July enabling financial institutions to hold, mint and transfer stablecoins.
The launch arrives amid signs of rising stablecoin transaction activity. Research from Standard Chartered points to growing usage even as the circulating supply of major tokens such as USDt and USDC has stayed comparatively flat through the year, suggesting the tokens are being moved more frequently rather than accumulating in wallets.
