An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 shook the region northwest of Pohuwato in Gorontalo province early Monday, striking at 04:34 WIB, Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported. The epicenter was located at sea roughly 29 kilometers from Pohuwato and at a depth of 76 kilometers, the agency said. BMKG stated the quake carried no tsunami potential, a message it also posted on social media after the event.
Data from BMKG's InaTEWS monitoring system placed the epicenter at 0.64 degrees north latitude and 121.75 degrees east longitude. Shaking was reported across Gorontalo and neighboring Central Sulawesi, with intensity varying by location on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale. According to information published by detikcom and Radio Republik Indonesia, Buol and Tolitoli in Central Sulawesi recorded the strongest shaking at III-IV MMI.
In Gorontalo, the regencies of Gorontalo, Gorontalo Utara, Boalemo and Pohuwato experienced tremors at III MMI. Gorontalo City and Bone Bolango regency felt weaker shaking at II-III MMI. Under the MMI scale, level II means the quake is felt by only some people and can sway light hanging objects, while level III produces vibrations similar to a passing truck. At level IV, shaking is felt widely indoors and by some outdoors, and may crack pottery or make doors and windows rattle.
As of the initial reports, there was no confirmation of damage to facilities or any casualties, and it remained unclear whether the shaking was felt in Banggai and surrounding areas. BMKG urged residents in affected areas to stay calm and to rely only on verified information, pointing to its own official updates as the reference for earthquake activity.
The agency also advised people in the affected regions to remain alert for possible aftershocks. The initial details on the quake's location, depth and parameters came from BMKG through the InaTEWS system. Authorities have not issued any further warnings related to the event.
