Heavy rain triggers 25m slope collapse, damages house in Kundasang
A 25-metre slope collapse caused by continuous heavy rain damaged the rear wall of a house in Kampung Pogun and Kampung Dumpiring Atas in Kundasang. No injuries were reported, and Civil Defence Force personnel have installed tarpaulin over the slope to prevent further erosion while monitoring the area.
A slope collapse roughly 25 metres high, triggered by continuous heavy rain, damaged the rear wall of a house in Kampung Pogun and Kampung Dumpiring Atas in Kundasang, according to the New Straits Times. No injuries or fatalities were reported, and a second house nearby was checked and found to be safe and undamaged.
The Civil Defence Force (APM), through the Kundasang Civil Defence Unit Centre (PUPA), sent one officer and two personnel to monitor the site. Preliminary inspections concluded that prolonged heavy rain in the area caused the collapse.
As a safety measure, APM personnel and village residents placed a tarpaulin over the collapsed slope to stop water from pooling and lower the risk of further soil erosion. The agency said monitoring continues to ensure the safety of people living nearby.
APM advised residents, especially those on slopes and in high-risk areas, to stay alert for signs of ground movement, follow safety instructions and relocate immediately if they notice early indications of a landslide.
Heavy rain that began the previous evening also triggered landslides and flash floods in several parts of Kundasang. A Perodua Kancil was believed to have been swept away by strong currents before overturning on a roadside embankment in Kampung Sinisian.
District police chief Superintendent Mursalin Mahmud was reported as saying that another landslide occurred behind Surau Al-Taqwah in Kampung Dumpiring Bawah. An overflow of water mixed with rocks also affected the main road connecting Kampung Pahu to Kampung Himbaan in Bundu Tuhan.
