Fuso truck hits four vehicles in Lampung; two students dead, one injured

Police in Pringsewu Regency, Lampung, say the driver of a Fuso truck that plowed into four vehicles over the weekend left the scene, and investigators are still working to determine why the rig lost control. The crash killed two junior high school students and left a third teenager seriously injured.

According to detikSumbagsel, the chain-reaction collision happened Sunday around 11:30 a.m. Western Indonesia Time on a downhill stretch of Jalan Raya Pekon Podosari, near the Way Sekampung Bridge. The truck, carrying sand from Sukoharjo District toward Pringsewu, is suspected to have suffered brake failure before it struck two cars and two motorcycles ahead of it.

The hardest hit was a Yamaha Mio motorcycle carrying three teenagers, which was dragged dozens of meters by the impact. Two passengers, Maher Zain, 13, and Rayhan Bintang, 14, died at the scene from severe injuries, while the rider, identified as M Rayhan, 14, was seriously hurt. All three were middle school students and were evacuated to a hospital.

The other vehicles involved were a Toyota Innova, a Mitsubishi Pajero and a Honda PCX. Drivers of the cars were unharmed, while the PCX rider, Novia Arum, 36, sustained minor injuries; her child, who was riding pillion, was not hurt.

Pringsewu Police traffic unit chief Iptu Adi Wibowo said officers are still questioning the truck driver's role and gathering witness statements. "We are still investigating the truck driver. We are also still looking into the cause of the accident and collecting information related to this incident," he said.

The force of the collision left several vehicles badly damaged, and the case remains under investigation as authorities try to piece together the sequence of events on the downhill road.
