Denham Springs Man, 34, Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash on LA 16

A 34-year-old Denham Springs man died after a single-vehicle crash on LA 16 in Livingston Parish, according to Louisiana State Police Troop A. Troopers began investigating the wreck shortly before 4 p.m. on Oct. 10 near Rolling Acres Drive. The man was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries, where he later died.

The preliminary investigation found that a 2005 Toyota Sequoia was traveling south on LA 16 at a high rate of speed. As the driver attempted to negotiate a left-hand curve, the SUV ran off the right side of the road, overturned several times and struck a culvert, state police said.

The driver was not restrained and was ejected from the vehicle, troopers said. A front-seat passenger who was properly restrained suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Investigators have not determined whether impairment played a role. A routine toxicology sample was collected and will be submitted for analysis, and the crash remains under investigation, according to Troop A.

State police used the case to remind motorists that speeding reduces a driver's ability to safely navigate curves, react to changing roadway conditions and keep control of a vehicle. Troopers also emphasized that seat belts are one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of serious injury or death, urging drivers to obey posted speed limits, stay attentive and ensure every occupant is properly restrained.
